I decided it was about time I did a sportive again so chose the short course Vajuny, 109km with 2500m of climbing so by no means easy especially as it finished up into Vajuny a 5km climb ave 8%.
We are now members of Velo club Bourg d’Oisans which meant I could air the new kit although that meant all the riders thought I was French!
An early start at 7.15am but not too cold, about 800 riders and as ever well organised, coffee and croisants readily available. It was great to know a few of the other riders and be recognised from around town, just need to improve my French dramatically!
I started about 2/3 down the field due to the usual last minute need for the toilet! We were off down the valley, it was fab riding in a group, we hit 70kmph, after 28k it was the climb over Alpe Grand Serre, I had planned to do it on heart rate but all that went out of the window when I found a good wheel to follow, it certainly does help although I am not sure 90% HR is sensible. The descent from Alpe Grand Serre does need some peddaling determined to stay with a group I worked really hard, I stayed with them all the way to Vallbonais then a quick toilet stop and some food and it was up Col d’Ornon, a climb I know like the back of my hand! once again I got in a group and gave myself a lecture not to end up on the front, that didn’t work but I did drop off the front quickly.
A quick water stop at the top of Col d’Ornon and it was off again for the final leg. Alan was at the top of Ornon on his motorbike, good inspiration. once down and along the valley it was the final ascent 5 tough km in 30 degree heat. It was tough, Alan was there again which helped.
A relief to be over the finish line in a great event, it certainly helped to be supported as I went round by other club members ‘ Lynne allez allez allez’
4hrs 50mins – gold std time, 2nd female in my category by 36secs (I blame wearing bib shorts) and 6th female overall what a great day out, I have the sportive bug again. 5 hours is a good ride lenghth.
