Cycling commences … March the month of choices

Wednesday, March 13th, 2013

March brings the start of the cycling season, the air gets warmer and the sun shines for longer so there’s no excuse not to get out at least in the valley round Bourg d’Oisans and Allemont.  This week has been very warm so we decided to do some climbing, mistake? No. Tough? Yes.

We rode up to Villard Reculas over to Huez and back down Alpe d’Huez, the sense of satisfaction on finishing was great, the views up and down the valley superb, particularly with all the snow clad mountains and the temperature was warm the only but …………. It highlighted  it’s going to be a hard journey back to fitness.

After three of days of fab skiing in Les 2Alpes, particularly Saturday – powder & blue skies we chose to get back on the bike. This time the balcons route up to bend 16 of Alpe d’Huez along the balcons road and back to home down the Col d’Lauteret. This route we do regularly throughout the summer I am sure it wasn’t ever that painful, particularly the first few bends up Alpe d’Huez. I can’t imagine I will be time trialling up there every Wednesday from mid-June but I am sure I will be. Today it was a 50km flattish ride round the valley, my legs needed some recovery!

We are skiing in Alpe d’Huez with friends on Saturday, tomorrow who knows that’s what’s great about March Skiing & Cycling.

First Cycle to Villard Reculas

Wednesday, March 6th, 2013

First Cycle up Villard Reculas 2013After a very quick trip to the UK to see family and friends which is always great,we were back home at Le Velo Jaune b&b.
We always travel back from Hull via the ferry from Hull to Zebrugge as that way we don’t have to drive through the UK to Dover and we arrive on the continent fresh after a good nights sleep. No early starts, a good crossing and it’s approximately the same drive time from Zebrugge as it is from Calais.

We had planned to go skiing today but the weather was a bit on the cloudy side up the mountain. So it was time to dust the bikes dwn and do our first mountain climb of the year! We cycled out towards Allemont and turned right to cycle up to Villard Reculas. A lovely climb thought the trees with plenty of snow at the sides of the roads. The roads were remarkably dry and the temperature 10 degrees.

The descent down Alpe d’Huez to Bourg d’Oisans was good because the roads were dry and there was little traffic.

Then back home, so glad we live on the flat as the last thing I wanted to do was climb back up to the house. We both moaned that our legs hurt but we enjoyed it and the journey back to cycling fitness has started!
